If you had no “taxable income” in a given year it is not necessary to file a tax return. Sometimes it is difficult to determine what might be taxable income. If you had a large settlement for the accident that may not be taxable but the interest you have made on that settlement would be. I could list dozens of situations like this one. You really should see a tax professional and explain your circumstances. My office would not charge for such a service and I am sure you can find someone in your area that also will advise you without charge
If you drew Social Security Disability, you may need to file. If you had any bank interest, or paid on a student loan, you may need to file. If you got any kind of 1099 statement showing income, it might be a good idea to file.
The simplest, easiest way to find out (because on here we don’t have all the details) is to call the IRS directly. They aren’t very busy, this time of year – but don’t wait until October 15th because that’s when the folks who asked for extensions for filing have their returns due in.
And relax. If you don’t owe taxes, you have up to 3 years to file without penalties or anything.
